School of History,l Culture and Tourism was established on January 22, 2018 in keeping with the development of national and in particular, local cultural tourism --- one of the City’s strategic pillar undertakings and industries. With the spreading of the historical culture heritage of Xi’an City and cultivating a new generation of talents for tourism as its mission, this newly established school has integrated the edges of Xi’an-U’s three majors ----history, museology, tourism management as well as the Chang’an Historical and Cultural Research Center into a unique combination of historical culture and tourism.
The faculty is well-qualified and the number structure is optimized. There are 53 faculty members, including 43 full-time teachers and 10 administrative assistants. There are 6 professors, 19 associate professors, 58% of full-time teachers, 17 doctors (including readings), 20 masters, and 86% of full-time teachers. The proportion of teachers with senior professional titles and masters or above exceeds the average level of the whole university. The senior title teachers also have provincial teaching teachers, municipal academic leaders, and experts at all levels.
The school boasts 3 provincial teaching & research platforms, which provide both teachers and students with opportunities for growth. Of them ,Chang’an History and Culture Research Center, is recognized asXi’an-U’s only Key Research Base of Humanities & Social Science at provincial level, and thus enjoys a uniquely influentialstatus in the study of regional history and culture; Specialized History, known as one of the 4 provincial key disciplines, has developed its own advantages in the study of history; Tourism Management, known as one of the 6 provincial top-notch-oriented specialties, is aimed at fostering up -to -date talents with practical ability for both all-in-one tourism and smart tourism.
The school offers three undergraduate programs and currently has a student enrollments of 601. History, a major for normal education, was founded in 1978 and in July 1988 started its cooperative undergraduate enrollment with the support Shaanxi Normal University. In November 2004, it was officially upgraded to an independent undergraduate major. The school boasts itself of rich collection of books in libraries for Chang’an historical culture and the specialized history respectively. Remarkable academic achievements have been attained including monographs, more than 100 papers (published in core journals) and quite a few programs supported by National Social Sciences Foundation of China and provincial and ministerial-level sectors.
Established in 1992 and upgraded to an undergraduate program in March 2004, the major of tourism management is well-known for its distinctive features and strong applicability. The students are provided with excellent professional training and practice opportunities thanks to the well-equipped campus-based training base and center: National Training Base for New Professional Talents( in our case, talents of tourism ), and Center for Complete Flow of Practical Training .
Majors of Cultural Relics and Museology, established in 2016, are highly acclaimed by students. The advanced equipped and elegantly designed practical training room along with the storage room are adequately good enough for majors of cultural relics and museology to conduct practice .
The school has developed a “knowledge + competence” talent training pattern in the curriculum system, classroom teaching reform, student competence cultivation and thinking practice so as to pave the way for students’ future employment. After four years’ study, history majors are required to have the competence in teaching and doing academic research. Museology majors are expected to have the competence in the appraisal and restoration of the cultural relics in museums, memorial halls and relics appraisal units. Tourist management majors are supposed to have the competence in landscape designing, hotel management and tourist guiding in tourist management departments and tourist companies.
Each of the majors in the school has established cooperation with the government and enterprises to create opportunities for students’ practice and future employment. For instance, Research Centre for Inheritance of Red Culture , set up by the History Department and the Research Office for the History of the Party to disseminate the heroic stories in the Party’s history by means of network literature; Research Centre for Conservation of Modern Architecture, set up by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology together with the Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage to make a survey of modern outstanding buildings within the 78 districts under the “Four Amends and Two Demolition Project”; Research Center for Tourism Development, set up by the Department of Tourism Management and Municipal Tourism Administration to make researches and plans for tourism industry in Xi’an by providing intellectual support for development of the city. Besides, the school has built cooperative relationship with high schools, hotels, travel agencies and museums to set up off-campus practice bases and training platform , which has provided services for the society, and thus earned Xi’an–U high esteem.
